Newsletter Summer 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the stake holders involved in the school this year, our dedicated Board of Management, staff, Fr. Kieron, Parents Association, Students Council and local clubs.

The PA has already issued their newsletter. The Students’ Council review is included here.

All at Goggins Hill wish our very talented 6th class the very best in their futures and we look forward to hearing how they get on in the years ahead.

I hope the sun shines on you all,

Happy Holidays,

Fiona Meehan

Bronze Age Project

During the year we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Danish artist Helle Hilsner. We explored all aspects of life in the Bronze Age and Helle helped us to make Bronze artefacts. The most exciting part of the project was when Helle came to the school to demonstrate how they made bronze during the Bronze Age. The pupils were amazed to see her melt the iron and copper to form bronze and then cast an axe head in a stone mould. The artefacts we produced have been mounted on wood and will be put on permanent display in the foyer and at the entrance to the school. A full report will be posted on the website shortly.

Confirmation & Communion

Congratulations to the 23 children who made their Confirmation on the 28th March and the 21 children who made their Communion on the 12th May

Cork Primary Sports

Well done to all of our athletes who participated in the Cork Primary Sports. The efforts of Goggins Hill were recognised when we were awarded the Blarney Shield for joint Best School in our division. Aoibhín O Connor and Rebecca Cullinane both won their heats; while Jonathan Keeffe went on to win the county final, making him the fastest boy in Cork at his age!

Website

Copies of the booklists, school calendar and uniform details as well as recent events and photographs are available to view in more detail on the website.

G.A.A.

Thank you to Jason Downey & Donal Lombard who coached our GAA teams during the year. We had great success in the Mini-7s, with the girls narrowly losing out to eventual winners Cloghroe, and the boys winning their division and reaching the County final. Thank you also to Games Development Officer Martin Coleman, who visited the school during June and ran a blitz with Goggins Hill and Ballyheada schools. Congratulations to Gerard Collins who represented Cork in the Primary Game at half time in the Cork –v-Tipperary Munster Hurling semi-final. Best of Luck to Jonathan Keeffe who will also represent Cork at half time in the Munster Football final, Cork –v- Clare on July 8th.

Soccer

Thank you to the Ballinhassig F.C. for their continued support in sending Chris O’ Mahony, Georgina McKeown and ladies international Denise O’ Sullivan to coach all classes

School Tours

Junior Infants to 5th class visited Rumley’s Farm last week. They all had a great day and loved seeing the owls, lemurs, water buffalo, alpacas, camels and loads more. They did go-karting, crazy golf and go on the zipwire.

6th class had a great time at the Kinsale Outdoor Education Centre where they did canoeing, archery, abseiling and orienteering.

STUDENT COUNCIL

This year the Student Council was very busy. We held some fundraising events and our most successful one was Sponsored Challenge Day. We raised €2,400.

Since Christmas we have organised a lot of other activities; Gardening with Adrienne Kelly, Easter egg hunt which took place at Easter, basketball for 6th class, themed no uniform day for Daffodil Day and a trip to Brinny for the best dressed. A Friendship Stop was introduced as well as a

Buddy System and we contributed to the review of the Nutrition Policy.

The Student Council also initiated the immensely popular rugby coaching by Fergus, Ray and Ger from Dolphin R.C.

We recently organised the Talent Show, where children displayed a variety of talents including singing, dancing, gymnastics, drama and more.

As usual, our sports day was a great success. Children enjoyed the 3-legged race, penalty shoot-out and obstacle course amongst others. The ice-cream supplied by the Parents Association was a lovely treat on the day.
