Eason's Spelling Bee

posted 22 Jul 2014, 03:07 by Administrator Goggins Hill
Back in March our 6th Class entered the Eason's Spelling Bee competition. It started out with a school spelling bee for all of our 6th class pupils, and the winner Brian Cussen went on to compete in the Cork spelling bee in the Rochestown Park Hotel in April. Some super spelling saw Brian crowned Cork Spelling Champion.

He then went on to represent Cork in the Muster spelling bee in Youghal at the end of June. We were all tuned our radios back in the school as the Spelling Bee was broadcast live on the air. Once again Brian did us very proud and he finished runner-up after stumbling on the word equiponderate (which had some of the teachers back in school stumped too). He still got a hero's welcome when he returned to the school with goodie bags for all of his classmates.

During the competition RTÉ chose some of the County Champions to feature in a documentary later in the year. As the Cork winner, Brian was selected and he was visited both at home and in school by a camera crew who spoke with Brian, his friends and family, and some of his teachers. He was also interviewed by Ryan Tubridy after the Munster round for the spelling bee. The footage will air on RTÉ on 31st August.
