April 2013

School is a busy and exciting place to be right now. Both Confirmation and Communion classes are busy preparing for Sacraments. These ceremonies will take place on 3rd and 11th of May.

·         Sciath na Scol Camogie and Hurling games took place this month. Well done to those who participated and a special thank you to the local GAA club, Donal Lombard and Mick Donovan for their support.

·         The Mini Sevens Hurling and Camogie Blitz took place this month, the girls came 3rd in the county finals, unfortunately the boys didn’t qualify this year.

·         8 Pupils along with Mrs. Foran and Ms. Madden were invited to represent the school in Brinny on Friday, 26 April. A cheque for the money raised by Brinny on Daffodil Day in conjunction with local schools was presented to The Irish Cancer Society.

·         Our school choir were invited to sing at the Annual Chernoybl Commemoration Ceremony in Bishop Lucey Park on Friday, 26 April. The sale of the Christmas CD produced by Bishopscourt Nursing Home in December with help from the school choir has raised over €1000 in much needed funds for the school. We are really grateful to Bishopscourt staff and residents for their support.

·         The School Calendar 2013/14 is now available to download from the school website www.gogginshillschool.com and is attached to electronic version of this note. Copies can also be requested from the office.

·         Building work on our new permanent extension has commenced. It is an exciting time and we will keep you updated on our website with pictures and progress reports. This project is entirely funded by a Department of Education Grant. A site map of the existing and future building is available to view on our website. Building Traffic has been restricted so school drop off and collection times should not be unduly affected.

·         I would like to thank those of you who are adhering to the new Traffic Policy. 3 o’clock continues to be the most congested time. Please note that supervision is provided until 3.15pm and traffic diminishes significantly after 3.05pm. Stagger your arrival if at all possible.

·         The School Garden Committee began the work of dismantling the existing school garden over the Easter Holidays with much appreciated help from volunteer parents, pupils and staff. They have exciting plans for a larger more developed garden space to the front of the school as soon as the building work is completed and the temporary cabins are removed.

·         A recent survey of parents regarding the introduction of School Blazers for First Communion Boys was met with an overwhelming majority of parents in favour and the Board intends introducing the School Blazer for 2014 Communicants.

·         From 2014 Confirmation candidates will be confirmed in their local church for all 3 schools in the parish. To introduce the new system, in 2014 our 6th class in Goggins Hill will be confirmed in Goggins Hill Church, the following year 5th and 6th class will be confirmed together and subsequently every second year.

·         Our Cash for Clobber collection in February raised €352.80. Thank you for your support. Now that the weather is finally improving we will be organising a spring clean Cash for Clobber collection in May. Please keep us in mind and start collecting!

·         Cork City Sports will take place on 22 May in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. We had the school heats in April in the GAA grounds and those selected are being given extra practice and training with Miriam Collins. Further information to follow.

·         Up to recently, Bishopstown Credit Union ran a savings scheme for children; however they were no longer in position to continue. Sammy Stamps is a Post Office Saving Scheme which our local Post Office has kindly agreed to run in our school once a week on Thursdays. Stamps cost €1 each and when a card of €20 is complete, you, the parent can open a children’s savings account in any local post office.

·         This term we have a new non-sport specific venture called ABCs of Movement (Agility, Balance, Co-ordination). Conor and Kevin take small groups of children from junior Infants to 3rd Class weekly to teach them the fundamental skills of movement needed for all sports. This will benefit all sports. This is fast paced fun aerobic workout.
